Domestic Violence Services Plead for More Funding

ABC CENTRAL WEST REPORT

Principal Solicitor Rachael Robertson often has gut-wrenching news for domestic violence victims when they build up the courage to escape.

Ms Robertson says legal services like Western Women's Legal Support do not have enough funding to cope with demand.

The specialist domestic violence solicitor has to tell some women they must wait weeks for an appointment because of soaring demand.

"We quite often have women say that if they are to return home, they will be killed or they're concerned they'll end up another statistic," she said.

"Out here where they are living on quite rural or remote properties, where police stations are several hundreds of kilometres away and perpetrators potentially have access to weapons, we don't know whether that is likely to happen if she returns home."
